Over the course of the unit, we will be going through different sections of the textbook in class. Whenever we start a reading, the questions will be due the next day and there will be a reading checkpoint made available after school for homework (unless there are other instructions). The attached Google Forms correspond to a specific topic/lesson in the textbook.
Conflict Between Popes and Monarchs
For centuries after the decline of Rome, people in Europe were still awed by the memory of the Roman empire. Churchmen and kings all claimed the authority of Rome. The Church continued to use Latin, the language of Rome. The popes governed the Church from Rome itself. At a time when Europe was split into hundreds of states, many longed for the political unity of the Roman empire.
As you have read, the Frankish king Charlemagne took the title of “emperor” in the year 800. He hoped to revive not only the Roman empire, but classical learning as well. Even though Charlemagne's empire did not last, later rulers pursued the same goals.
