Instead of flying straight to Rome from Berlin as I originally intended, I was able to find an inexpensive flight to Milan and I took the train to Venice to spend a day in that magical city before heading onto the Italian capital. One thing, however, that I didn’t take into account was that I was in Venice on Easter Sunday! Even though I was in Venice on a holiday, I was able to see most everything I wanted by taking the water taxi through the Grand Canal to St. Mark’s, the Campanile, and eventually, all the way to Lido Isle. Venice is a truly unique city and because of its unique location, it is constantly under threat by rising sea waters and just plain old erosion. That said, the people of Venice are extremely proud of their city and I have no doubt that they will find a way to keep this incredible place safe for generations to come, visit, and learn.
