2009 • Berlin
April 7, 2009 to April 11, 2009
During my semester abroad, I had the opportunity to travel as I saw fit during Spring Break. As such, I felt the need to squeeze as much into that week as humanely possible and my first stop was the historic capital of Germany: Berlin. Despite being an incredibly old city, Berlin does not have as many old buildings as, say, London or Paris being that much of city was reduced to rubble by the end of the Second World War. The city, however, is still alive with history. From the Reichstag Building that saw the rise and fall of two of the three German Reichs to the former American Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin is a city that is catered to those that are interested in modern and early modern history. When I was in Berlin, I ended up spending a great amount of time at the German Historical Museum (Deutsches Historisches Museum), which is set up as a massive timeline of Germany history that you can walk through. Also, seeing the bits of the Berlin Wall still standing makes you reflect on how far we have come since the end of the Cold War in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
