Compared to the Civil War, which was fought just fifteen years later, the Mexican War sometimes seems like a small thing. But it was not! Thousands of Mexicans and Americans died, and half of the country of México was taken by the United States as a war prize. This DBQ asks the simple question: Was the United States justified in going to war with México?

Westward Movement
English colonists began moving west almost as soon as they arrived in America in the 1600s. Westward expansion quickly became a tradition that helped define the nation.
Settling Oregon Country
By the 1820s, white settlers occupied much of the land between the Appalachians and the Mississippi River. Until this time, those lands were considered “the West.” However, families searching for good farmland continued to move even farther west. In front of them were the Great Plains that stretched to the Rockies. Few settlers stopped on the plains, which were considered too dry for farming. Instead, most settlers headed to lands in the Far West. The movement to this distant region changed the meaning of the West for Americans. Now, it stretched all the way to the Pacific coast.

Political Conflict and Economic Crisis

Jackson Wins the Presidency
During the early 1800s, a growing spirit of democracy changed the political system and affected American ideas about social classes. The main cause stemmed from the influence of Andrew Jackson. He was an American politician during this time who supported expanding democratic rights. From the time of his first campaign for president in 1824 until his death in 1845, he dominated American politics. Jackson’s policies had a significant effect on issues such as voting rights and the ways in which government functions. This period is often known as the Age of Jackson.

Mexican-American War DBQ Documents
In 1846 the United States went to war with México. Like several wars the United States has fought, this war had its strong supporters and critics. Compared to the Civil War, which was fought just fifteen years later, the Mexican War sometimes seems like a small thing. But it was not! Thousands of Mexicans and Americans died, and half of the country of México was taken by the United States as a war prize. This DBQ asks the simple question: Was the United States justified in going to war with México?
Before writing, the class will go over the attached documents to help you and your peers better formulate your arguments as to whether or not you think the United States was justified in going to war with México.

New Spain and Independence for Texas
In the 1840s, New Mexico Territory included present-day Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and Utah, and parts of Colorado. California lay to the west. This huge region, ruled by Mexico, was southwest of the unorganized territory that the United States acquired through the Louisiana Purchase.
