During her middle school years and into high school, my sister played ice hockey and participated in a few travel teams that would go to a number of different places around the country. She had gone to Alaska, Michigan, Florida, and other places, but when a trip to Massachusetts was planned, I decided to take time off of work and go on the trip as well. Up to this point, I had never been to Boston or anywhere in New England despite my father actually being born in Massachusetts my grandparents living in this region for a large part of their lives. While in New England, much to my dismay, we had to schedule sight-seeing around my sister’s hockey games, but we were able to see quite a lot. Before one of her games in southern Massachusetts near the state line with Rhode Island, we made a quick trip into Providence and on a day off, we drove up the coast through New Hampshire and into Maine. It is easy to see why New England is often considered to be one of the most historic parts of the United States. There are many places that pre-date independence by decades, if not over a century.
