Classwork: The Gilded Age & Progressive Era (2)

Over the course of the unit, we will be going through different sections of the textbook in class. Whenever we start a reading, the questions will be due the next day and there will be a reading checkpoint made available after school for homework (unless there are other instructions). The attached Google Forms correspond to a specific topic/lesson in the textbook.

Urbanization and the Rise of Progressivism

The late 1800s has been called the Gilded Age. The name came from an 1873 novel by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner titled The Gilded Age, which poked fun at the era’s greed and political corruption. Gilded means coated with a thin layer of gold. It implies that a surface glitter hides a darker reality. For many Americans, the novel captured the spirit of the time. In the words of one observer, it was government “of, by, and for the rich.”
